SITE LOCATION:

Aviation hangar located in Columbus, Georgia

CONTAMINATION:

Three monitor wells, including one well located within the hangar,  contained (Jet A) aviation fuel at a maximum combined (aggregate) thickness of 0.79 feet. The LNAPL had persisted since the investigation commenced seven years prior.

HYDROGEOLOGY:

Groundwater was present at depths of 6 to 9 feet in a silty to clayey sand (see cross-section below).

PLUME DESCRIPTION:

The Jet A LNAPL plume measured approximately 80 feet x 130 feet. Approximately 75% of the LNAPL plume was beneath the hangar (see plume map below).

PRIOR REMEDIAL EFFORTS:

Soil excavation and numerous mobile dual-phase/multi-phase extraction events had been conducted at this site.  

SURFAC® EFFECTIVENESS:

Five days of SURFAC® were conducted in March/April 2007. SURFAC® completely removed the LNAPL, resulting in SITE CLOSURE.
