Services Patented Cosolvent Amended EFR®
(Trade Name COSOLV®)
COSOLV® is EcoVac Services’ patented process combining
MPE/DPE with cosolvent flushing. This technology targets sites with
free-phase dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) or high concentrations
of their dissolved constituents. EcoVac Services works closely with
Dr. Ron Falta of Clemson University on these projects. Dr. Falta
is one of the leading researchers on buoyancy compensated cosolvent
flushing for DNAPL remediation.
COSOLV® utilizes buoyancy adjusted alcohol-based (cosolvent)
fluids injected combined with DPE/MPE (EFR®) for placement,
distribution, and capture of cosolvent injectates. COSOLV® facilitates
DNAPL recovery by the partitioning of alcohols into DNAPLs, which
turns a DNAPL into a LNAPL. This effect is enhanced by the use of
calcium chloride to adjust the density and buoyancy of the injectate
for targeted groundwater remediation. The addition of the salts
also increases the cosolvent partitioning into the DNAPL liquids.
The ability to target the injection by manipulation of the injectate
density, the conversion of the DNAPL to LNAPL, and the capture by
EFR® is a unique approach to maximize contact with and removal
of recalcitrant DNAPLs.
